
Two-day celebration for the grand opening of Nashville's Music City Center. Join Mayor Karl Dean for a Walk with the Mayor just prior to the center's opening at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 19. Public preview tours and an open house including kids' activities, a zip line through the exhibit hall, and the grand opening of the Songwriters Hall of Fame are scheduled from 2 pm to 6 pm. The Nashville Symphony will headline the music on Sunday with a performance at 3 pm. On Monday, May 20 at 9 am Mayor Karl Dean will lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the corner of 5th Avenue South and Demonbreun. He will deliver his State of Metro address at the center at 10 am. Concluding the two-day celebration will be the Grand Opening concert with performances by Sheryl Crow, The Time Jumpers featuring Vince Gill, the Fisk Jubilee Singers and Mikky Ekko. Picnic in the ParkHead to Church Street Park on your lunch break and enjoy a picnic in the park! The Drumbinos will perform a percussion ensemble along with cast members from The Lion King. The Drumbinos is a group of children ages seven to twelve who will play upbeat west African-style music. Music from noon to 1 pm. Plus, local food truck, Jonbalaya, will be on site from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Or, bring your own lunch and enjoy eating outdoors. Tables and chairs will be set up for this event.

Ellie's Run for Africa 5K and family fun day is this Saturday. A 5K and cultural performances and activities for kids. Plus, games, prizes, and food. This event raises money for schools in Kenya. Free parking available. Registration opens at 6:30 am, 5K starts at 7:30 am, and the kids' fun run begins at 8:30 am. Start and finish line at 1st Avenue and Broadway. NOTE: Road closures along Demonbreun, Broadway, 1st and 2nd Avenues associated with this race. Expect rolling road closures between 5:30 am and noon on Saturday, May 18.
The Memphis Men's Chorale presents a concert of sacred and secular choral music. This concert features music by Aaron Copland, Mack Wilberg, John Lennon, Otis Redding, Randall Thompson and others. The Memphis Men’s Chorale is an auditioned ensemble of 24 men and is in its sixth season of providing the distinctive sound of an all male ensemble to audiences in the Mid-South.
Photographer Kris Kristoffersen will speak about his work and sign copies of his book, North & South: The Brothers War. Following the book signing, the bluegrass duet, Granville Automatic, will perform songs inspired by the Civil War era. This event is held in collaboration with Camp Chase Gazette, The Civil War Courier and the Citizens’ Companion.
